How to Become a Licensed Massage Therapist in Virginia

If you've thought about a career where you help people feel better every day, massage therapy might be the right fit. Getting licensed in Virginia follows clear steps, and you can finish your training in under a year.
Here's how it works.
Step 1: Meet the basic requirements
To become a licensed massage therapist in Virginia, you need to be at least 18 years old. Most massage therapy schools, including OMNA, also require a high school diploma or GED to enroll.
Step 2: Complete a state-approved massage therapy program
Virginia requires at least 500 hours of training from a massage therapy program approved by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV). OMNA's Massage Therapy program goes further, with 625 hours that include more than 180 hours of hands-on clinic work with real clients, so you graduate confident, not just qualified. You can still finish in about 7.5 months on a part-time schedule.
Along the way, you'll build your foundation in anatomy and physiology, Swedish and deep tissue massage, sports and therapeutic techniques, and specialty services like cupping and reflexology.

Step 3: Pass the MBLEx
The MBLEx (Massage & Bodywork Licensing Examination) is the national exam Virginia uses for licensure. It covers anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, pathology, client assessment, ethics, and professional practice. At OMNA, MBLEx prep is built right into the program, with exam review in your final stretch of training. You'll finish ready to sit for the exam with confidence.
Step 4: Apply for your Virginia license
Massage therapists in Virginia are licensed through the Virginia Board of Nursing. When you apply, you'll submit proof of your training and MBLEx results, complete a criminal background check, and agree to follow Virginia's massage therapy laws and code of ethics. Your license renews every two years.
Step 5: Start your career
Once you're licensed, you can work in spas, wellness centers, chiropractic offices, sports medicine practices, physical therapy clinics, fitness centers, resorts and hotels, and even cruise ships. Many therapists go on to build their own private or mobile practice, with their own schedule and their own clients.

How long does it take?
At OMNA Institute, the Massage Therapy program takes about 7.5 months. It's offered part-time, with several schedule options to fit around work and family. The program is hybrid: you learn theory online and build your hands-on skills in person on our Lynchburg campus, including real clinic experience with clients before you graduate.
